— Craigslist advertising agencies across Denver are shutting down for good, ending a six-month absence that has left the Internet a ghost town.
The ad agency, Denver Advertising Group, will shut down on Tuesday, March 16, and its employees will be laid off as of Monday.
The agency has been working to bring back online ads after a five-year hiatus.
The company says it had more than 1,000 ads posted online during the five-month hiatus, but it had no immediate plans to continue doing so.
“We’re very sorry to the advertising industry for the many ad experiences that were missed out on,” Craig Johnson, a spokesman for the agency, said in a statement.
“We are in the process of finding a new buyer for our business and are looking forward to seeing the community again.”
The agency’s move comes at a time when Denver is struggling to find a way to sustain its online advertising.
Its unemployment rate is 8.3 percent, according to a recent state survey.
It has struggled to attract more than a few thousand people each week to its website, where its ads appear.
The online ads are often accompanied by a message from Denver Advertising that says: “I want to help you find the best ad for your business.”
The ads are still seen by more than 100,000 people per month on Denver’s website.
Denver Advertising’s work was the subject of a recent lawsuit in which the city of Denver filed a $1 million defamation suit against Johnson, alleging that the agency had engaged in a pattern of false statements about the business and its ads.
Denver Advertising’s ads, which are posted on the website Denver Advertising, were widely seen in Denver, which has a population of nearly 8 million people.
The agency did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
Denver is one of three Denver advertising agencies that have been shut down in recent weeks.
The other agencies were Colorado Advertising, which had been operating online for about a year, and Denver Advertising Associates, which was in the middle of its six-year existence.
The last Denver advertising agency to go offline was a Colorado advertising company that had operated since 2007.
The Craigslist ad company, which is owned by San Francisco-based Craigslist, said on Monday that it would continue to post ads on Craigslist.
Craigslist did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the closing.
